Slavic Studies is pleased to welcome two new students into our PhD program.
Originally from Los Angeles, Ross Hirzel graduated from Amherst College in May 2020, where he majored in Russian and German. His senior thesis compared shapes of historical narrative in Tolstoy and Sebald.
Originally from Yucaipa California, John Russo graduated from the University of Utah in December 2020, with majors in Russian and Political Science. John lived as a missionary in the Donbass region of Ukraine for two years (before the Russian invasion). He is interested in intellectual history of the long 19th century in Russia and also in literature as a medium of political reflection.
