German influences on wellness, health, and pharmaceuticals in America have a long history. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, immigrants brought traditional healing practices and new medical knowledge with them, while Americans traveled to German universities to study the latest scientific developments. For two days, this symposium will bring together scholars from Europe and the United States to explore these transatlantic transfers of knowledge in the areas of home remedies and pharmaceuticals, naturopathy and exercise, midwifery, and medical treatment. The symposium concludes with an exhibit of archival materials from the collections of the Max Kade Institute and the American Institute of the History of Pharmacy.
