Humanities Now: Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine
Andrey Ivanov, Anna Tumarkin, Francine Hirsch, and Kirill Ospovat
Hosted by the Center for Humanities
For over a month, we’ve witnessed the brutal attack by Russian forces on the people of Ukraine. The war of aggression changes daily, as defiant Ukrainian leaders and citizens defend homes and cities alongside a mass migration of refugees out of Ukraine into neighboring European countries and beyond. In this virtual Humanities NOW conversation, we’ll discuss the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine to provide intellectual, historical, and personal context for the outbreak of war and resurgence of colonialism in Europe. We’ll discuss the outlines of ideology that is driving Putin’s invasion, national identity and the role of language in the conflict, the refugee crisis, as well as Russian dissent and the unfolding scenario of potential indictments of war crimes against Russia.
