Molly Ann Zimmermann

Majors: BA Environmental Science, BA Conservation Biology

Certificate: Folklore Certificate, Environmental Studies Certificate

Hometown: Oak Harbor, Washington

Favorite GNS+ class: SCANDST 342: Nordic Mythology

Favorite course from another department: BOT 401: Vascular Flora of Wisconsin

Favorite memory from UW: I don’t have anything specific in mind, but my favorite thing about going to school here has been meeting so many different people who are going on different paths, and who have different backgrounds than me. I love learning about people’s perspectives and making new friends 🙂

Something you learned about yourself in college: I learned that it’s never too late to change your mind, whether that be what you believe in, what you want to do with your future, or what you want to study. There are so many opportunities here to challenge your ideas and to show you so many new views and things you would never have had the opportunity to see before that can help you become a better more well rounded person!

Future plans and dreams: It’s really up in the air right now, but working as an intern (and now apprentice!) at Allen Centennial Gardens has shown me that I really enjoy working in the public gardening sphere and I would enjoy doing something similar in the future!

Any advice for incoming students? Don’t be afraid to change your major, and take classes that aren’t necessarily part of what is required. That’s how I learned my love for folklore and made me decide to get a certificate in it!

Sophia C. Schmidt

Major: Theatre & Drama (Acting Option)

Certificates: German, Physics, and Art Studio (2D)

Hometown: River Falls, WI

Favorite memory from UW: Playing Sherlock Holmes in “Ms. Holmes & Ms. Watson – #2B” with University Theatre!

Something you learned about yourself in college: I’ve just begun to learn who I really am, and it will be a life-long quest. In college, I’ve learned how to love myself.

Future plans and dreams: No plans, only dreams. Pursuing an acting career, writing a few books, creating a clothing line, and perhaps entering academia.

Any advice for incoming students? It is never too late to start over.

And here is my favorite quote:

“In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer. And that makes me happy. For it says that no matter how hard the world pushes against me, within me, there’s something stronger – something better, pushing right back.” (Albert Camus)

Future plans and dreams: I will be departing for Peace Corps North Macedonia this September as a community development volunteer. After my service I am not sure what I will do, but I know it will be an adventure. My dreams are to keep growing as a person and advocate and to see what I can learn from unique people.

Any advice for incoming students? Don’t try to be the most interesting person, be the most interested. Explore different subjects, even if they intimidate you and always be open to making new friends!

Podi Prichanont

Majors: Neurobiology, Psychology, and Polish

Hometown: Bangkok, Thailand

Favorite GNS+ class: SLAVIC 331: Fourth Year Polish I (with Pani Ewa Miernowska)

Favorite course from another department: GENETICS 520: Neurogenetics

Favorite memory from UW: Watching the aurora with my friends on the dock by Mendota Lake

Something you learned about yourself in college: I can do ANYTHING (as long as I put my mind to it). The Polish language is the hardest thing I have ever had to learn. But because of my strong passion for the Polish language and the warm support from Pani Ewa Miernowska, I reached the level of proficiency that I never thought I was capable of. This experience taught me that the hardest challenges often lead to the most rewarding growth. This mindset has now carried over into all areas of my life.

Future plans and dreams: I’m aiming to get into biomedical research. My dream is to eventually have my own lab — maybe I’ll become a professor who does research, or maybe I’ll even start my own biotech company. We’ll see!

Future plans and dreams: I am currently applying to Physician Assistant school and will be taking a gap year in hopes of starting school again next May

Any advice for incoming students? Savor every moment! There is plenty of time to take interesting classes outside of your major and to pursue other interests and hobbies. Make sure to study hard but also balance spending time with your friends.
