24th Annual GDGSA Conference – Movement in German & Dutch Studies
October 11 - October 12
Co-sponsored by the Center for German & European Studies, the Department of German, Nordic & Slavic+, the Wisconsin Experience Grant, and the Global Badger Experience Grant.
The German and Dutch Graduate Student Association (GDGSA) presents it 24th annual conference with the theme “Movement in German & Dutch Studies.” Languages, language use, and language acquisition are constantly in flux and are continuously shaped by time, place, culture, contact, and speakers. This has influenced the investigations of many researchers who have focused on modality, on oral and written culture, on multilingualism, on identity, on the hybridity of languages and of cultures, on migration and patterns of change, and recently also on machine learning and use. Movement has led to advancement, enthusiasm, and joy as well as to resistance, skepticism, and insecurity. It can be seen in shifts of paradigms, literary periods, the ever-changing nature and use of language, and the transcendence of boundaries.
This year’s conference seeks to shed light on past, present, and future movement(s) within the Germanic world. Over the course of two days, graduate students will present their research on literature, media studies, linguistics, and pedagogy. Keynote speaker Dr. Caroline Rieger from the University of British Columbia will focus on social justice in applied linguistics in her talk on Friday afternoon. Dr. Mary Hennessy and Dr. Zach Ramon Fitzpatrick will lead a workshop on Saturday afternoon titled “Teaching Intersectionality with Moving Images.”
