Der Hofmeister

Berlin-based director Jürgen Kuttner and students in German 372, “Theater auf Deutsch,” present a performance of JMR Lenz’s 18th-century drama “Der Hofmeister” (“The Tutor”) — with a Brechtian twist! The performance will take place in German, with regular subtitles/explanations in English. The event is free and open to the public, and students, staff, and friends are particularly welcome!
Lenz’s tragicomedy “Der Hofmeister” was reworked in 1950 by dramatist Bertolt Brecht into a subversive commentary on Germany’s history and future, pointing to the pitfalls of blind servitude and class-based oppression. Today, Kuttner and the students in German 372 breathe new life into this funny and provocative piece.
