Kazakh and Turkish Courses Fall 2019

GNS 331 – First Semester Kazakh

This course provides students with an introduction to the Kazakh language, which is a Turkic language spoken by about 11 million people in Kazakhstan, China, Mongolia, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Russia, and Iran. Students will work within four language skills: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. The primary goal of the course is to learn to communicate in Kazakh in authentic situations and Kazakh will be used as the primary language in classroom instructions, with minimal use of English for explanations of grammar.


GNS 339 – First Semester Turkish (Meets with Second Semester Turkish)

Designed for students who are interested in learning the modern Turkish language (“Istanbul Turkish”) and cultures, and who have limited or no previous language use. This course introduces basic grammar & vocabulary building competence in novice level listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in Turkish. Authentic materials will be provided to simulate real-life situations. Students will identify basic products, practices, and perspectives of Turkish speaking cultures. Negotiating cultural nuance and intercultural competence within the social justice paradigm will be emphasized.


GNS 340 – Second Semester Turkish (Meets with First Semester Turkish)

Designed for students who are interested in learning the modern Turkish language (“Istanbul Turkish”) and cultures, and who have limited or no previous language use. GNS 439 – Third Semester Turkish (Meets with Fourth Semester Turkish)

This course is designed to help students develop intermediate competence in spoken and written Turkish. Emphasis is on listening comprehension, reading, speaking, writing, and cultural and historical knowledge. Knowledge of the grammatical structures taught in the first two semesters is assumed while we review them and introduce advanced grammar preferably in context. Negotiating cultural nuance and intercultural competence within the social justice paradigm will be emphasized.


GNS 431 – Third Semester Kazakh

This course continues the study of the Kazakh language with an emphasis on four language skills: listening, reading, writing, and speaking in order to develop proficiency at the intermediate level. The primary goal of the course is to improve communication in Kazakh. Instruction will emphasize the language that is relevant to situations that students are likely to encounter if they travel to or live in Kazakhstan. The secondary goal of the course is to improve students’ understanding of Kazakh society and culture.


GNS 440 – Fourth Semester Turkish (Meets with Third Semester Turkish)

This course is designed to help students develop intermediate competence in spoken and written Turkish. Emphasis is on listening comprehension, reading, speaking, writing, and cultural and historical knowledge. GNS 531 – Fifth Semester Kazakh

Building on skills developed in fourth semester Kazakh, in this course students will develop proficiency at the advanced level in listening, speaking, reading and writing.


GNS 539 – Fifth Semester Turkish (meets with Sixth Semester Turkish)

TR 2:30-3:45 pm  Van Hise 583        Dr. Nalan Erbil        (3 credits)

This course will focus equally on reading, writing, listening and speaking skills with the goal to enhance critical literacy in Turkish. Materials will include various authentic texts produced for native speakers such as novels, short stories, poems, and films. Perspectives of Turkish speaking cultures will be analyzed in comparison. Azeri/Ottoman will be incorporated upon demand.


GNS 540 – Sixth Semester Turkish (meets with Fifth Semester Turkish)
