About: Alyssa is a PhD student in the German Department and pursuing a doctoral minor in history. After completing her Bachelor’s, Alyssa taught in many schools in western Styria and Vienna, Austria as a Fulbright teaching assistant. Her master’s thesis examined public perceptions of language prestige in Vienna and how expanding the foreign language offerings in the Austrian public school system could benefit students with a migration background. Before re-joining the German Department at UW, she was a German instructor at two language schools in central Mexico. Inspired by her many years in Austria, Alyssa would like to focus her dissertation research on Austrian Studies. Her research interests include art history, all things Viennese, and interwar Austria. She is also interested in the history and cultures of Slavic countries and the former Soviet Union.
