The Karpat Scholarship provides awards to selected students who take Turkish Language courses. The scholarship offers $500 to each recipient in their first year of Turkish Language instruction at UW-Madison, and $1,000 to each recipient in their second year of Turkish Language instruction.
Typically, two new recipients of this award are selected annually. These awards are funded by the Kemal H. Karpat Center for Turkish Studies.
Eligibility: Eligible applicants are undergraduate or graduate students who will be enrolled in Turkish language courses at UW-Madison in the upcoming academic year. Incoming freshmen are included as eligible.
Deadline: The application deadline for 2023 is July 31. Starting in 2024, the annual application deadline will be July 1; when July 1 falls on a weekend, the deadline will be July 5. Applications consist of the student application dossier.
The student application dossier consists of the following materials:
1a. Karpat Language Scholarship Application Cover Sheet
1b. Statement of purpose: This is a Word essay in English of 800 to 1000 words in length. The essay should be in 12 point font and should be double-spaced. In your essay, explain (i) your experience in learning languages, (ii) purpose(s) for studying Turkish language and (iii) how the Turkish program fits into your intellectual interests, academic plans and plans for life after graduation.
1c. UW-Madison transcript (unofficial campus copy is acceptable), transcripts from any other colleges or universities attended after high school graduation (official copies for transcripts from other institutions), and high school transcripts (for incoming freshmen only)
2. Contact information for two references: E-mail and phone number of two references who can comment on your academic potential.
The Karpat Language Scholarship award selection committee consists of faculty and staff teaching in the German+ unit of the department of German, Nordic, and Slavic+ and members of the Kemal H Karpat Center for Turkish Studies. The committee will consider all the information in the application dossier and may contact references. The committee will give preference, among undergraduate and graduate applicants, to those with a demonstrated commitment to Turkish Studies in their academic or career plans. Awards will be announced by August 15 via e-mail.
